Presentation of EKL charity - Fabienne's interview

Enfants de Klang Leu (EKL) is one of the charity partners Mini Lama is working with. We asked some questions to Fabienne Hankard, the secretary of the NGO, to better understand their actions and how the donations may help the children they are taking care of.

Hello Fabienne, could you present yourself?

I am a 53 year old psychologist. I'm married, and the mother of a young lady who’s 23 years old. I have been living and working in Singapore for 12 years and I have had the chance to travel in SEA many times and more specifically in Cambodia. I have been an active volunteer in Enfants de Klang Leu (EKL) charity for 11 years, and since 2018 I have been appointed as secretary of the NGO.

Could you explain us where is EKL present and what does it do?

EKL charity is located in Cambodia in the area of Sihanoukville.

Our team at the day care centre welcomes everyday around 60 underprivileged kids and teenagers of the village of Klang Leu; we also help their family members (around 250 persons) as they live under precarious conditions.

We provide health care, food support to the families and balanced meals at the centre, but also drinkable water and access to proper hygiene.

We fully equip the children to go to school and we organise at the centre English & Khmer lessons, mathematics courses and computer classes.

The centre is like a safe haven where kids can also rest, study, have artistic and sport activities, read books, and play with their friends.

For many years we have been collecting second hand toys, clothes, shoes, sport gears, stationaries… and when we travel to Cambodia, these items fill most of the space in our suitcases.

How is EKL benefiting from Mini Lama's donations?

In 2020 Mini Lama started giving us toys, accessories and clothes for babies and toddlers. These items will be delivered to the centre once the travel ban due to covid 19 will be lifted. In fact, I will carry them myself to the centre once the visa and quarantine conditions in Cambodia will be reduced. Hopefully very soon!

At least 15 young kids will directly benefit from these donations.

The year 2020 has been a very difficult year for everybody, and it's especially true for people and children living there.

After 11 years as a volunteer, I am still surprised how great things and big changes in children’s lives can be done with little means… imagine with more helping hands and bigger means what could be done!

How can we contact EKL if we'd like to help further?
